Electronic cigarettes have only recently come onto the market and are an alternative to smoking “real” cigarettes. It is a battery operated pen like device that can look like an ordinary pen or can look like an ordinary cigarette which gives the user nicotine hit via a vaporized solution. This is about as close to actually smoking a full normal cigarette without actually smoking one. There is no smoke emitted from the device, no tobacco used or lighting required. You can actually legally use them anywhere anytime legally without fear of recrimination.

All electronic cigarettes come in four parts; a heating element or atomizer, a rechargeable battery, a mouth piece and an electrical LED light cover. The mouth piece or cartridge is disposable and can be bought from stores from up and down the country. Within them they contain a material that is laced with the nicotine solution. You can either refill the mouth piece with more solution if and when it runs out, or you can buy more or replace it. The heating element or atomizer as it is also known vaporizes the liquid which is in the mouth piece so that the nicotine can be inhaled. The battery can be different from make to make and some are lithium based or USB charger. The E cigarettes as they are also known to have an electronic airflow sensor in them. It has a timer on it to prevent it from over heating and cutting out or melting the cigarette. The LED light on the end lights up to let you know that the device is working but also known to help you emulate the action of smoking making it real to you. The battery is rechargeable and some come with a battery cell that can be charged and then replace the one with the lesser charge so that, that one can then be charged.

The nicotine solution is available on the market in a wide range of different flavors and levels of concentrations of nicotine. This is so that it is similar to smoking full strength, mild, ultra light and light cigarettes. The solution can be made up in several different ways where the nicotine solution is made at either six percent, four percent, two percent or 0.1 percent. The flavors are traditional cigarette taste, menthol cigarette tastes and other more interesting flavors such as strawberry, orange, coffee, caramel, lime. Lemon, honey, blueberry, mint and can even be the same tastes as traditional cigarettes like Marlboro.

Somoking these E cigarettes or electronic cigarettes are a lot more healthier than normal cigarettes but are still bad news when it comes to your health. In most countries you will find that their use is completely legal in every way, others you have to buy certain parts on prescription like the nicotine solution itself and in only Australia is the electronic cigarette or E cigarette illegal in all ways. They cannot be sold in this country at all.

Zyban is a tablet supplied via prescription from your general practitioner and contains a drug called Bupropion. This drug is prescribed for people who are trying to quit smoking and is given to you before you begin to quit. You take it for two weeks before you quit and then during the second week you quit smoking. Zyban also has antidepressant qualities so that when you do quit you do not feel the same negative affects as you would normally with other nicotine replacement therapies. It also has qualities that allow whilst being taken to help the weight gain that is associated with stopping smoking diminish. In clinical trials it has been shown to be the most effective method of quitting smoking and staying being quit.

There are some important things that should be looked at before you take Zyban. If you are epileptic, have an eating disorder or have suffered from an eating disorder before or any of the following drugs within the last twenty one days; MAOI, Marplan, Nardil, Azilect, Eldepryl, Parnate and any other antidepressants. If you are also under the age of twenty five you will need to have regular doctors check every week for the first three months of taking the tablets. If taken in conjunction with another drug called Wellbutrin then you could possibly overdose on Zyban which can risk you to have a seizure or a heart attack.

It is totally advised not to smoke at any time after the process of the first two weeks if you are using another nicotine replacement therapy item as you will overdose on nicotine. You also need to avoid drinking whilst taking Zyban, if you already drink regularly then consult your doctor before starting your course of Zyban as it can also cause sezuires and heart attacks. Also if you have recently stopped or are taking diazepan or valium the Zyban is not for you.

Zyban can be a very hard drug to take especially if you have already had or have high blood pressure, a head injury, a tumor, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, bipolar, diabetes – insulin dependant, steroid, mental illness drugs, alcohol, valium, narcotics, pain killers, diet drugs, cocaine, speed, ice and or any other street drugs. If you have also ever had self harming thoughts of any kind and if you begin treatment and feel that you are having suicidal or harmful though tendencies then you need to stop treatment immediately. You also need to tell your direct family that you are taking Zyban as they need to keep an eye on you for sudden mood changes or other symptoms so that they can make you aware of this so you can report it to your doctor.

Taking Zyban whilst pregnant is thought to harm your unborn baby so if you think you are pregnant or you are pregnant then it is advised that you stop taking Zyban immediately.

These are the hard and unknown facts about what you could do to your body that most people will not tell you.

Using NRT’s (nicotine replacement therapies) are fantastic ways to quit smoking but you also need to use will power and also break the association of when you would normally smoke. You need to avoid situations especially the first few month’s places you associate smoking with. Obviously you cannot do this with where you live but you can take certain steps to make sure you are not tempted. Start by throwing away all of your ashtrays and lighters, tell people that you have quit so they are no longer allowed to smoke in your home. Avoid going to pubs and clubs that you normally associate with smoking. I have managed to come up with a seven step plan for you to use so that you can finally break the habit! Give it a go;

1. Identify your triggers: You need to figure out what sets off your cravings most people find that on waking they smoke, after eating, after a stressful situation, talking on the phone, meeting your mates and going out for a drink. You need to identify them, write them down and then plan different ways of going about things.

2. Put in place a positive habit to replace the negative one: Change the way you do things by implementing positive things instead of the negative of smoking. Change the way you do things; get up and exercise instead of your morning cig, take a long hot shower, learn yoga, meditation even giving your home a good spring clean will help you change your thought pattern and re program your mind to take away all of those extra cravings.

3. Stick to the positive alternatives: This means that you need to for at least the time period of six weeks keep on with your new positive habits rather which are replacing your old smoking related habits. This way you are constantly reinforcing them. You may find that one habit change does not work for you so change it for something else. This is all about trial and error and you may not get it right the first time. You may also find that you slip by accident into an old habit. Don’t berate yourself just pick yourself up and carry on.

4. Understand that your will power has to be strong: Your urges will come and will go, sometimes they will last a minuet or two others longer. They will come in intense urges that you have to try and ride out by sticking to the positive alternatives you have devised. Always change the direction you are in to make these compulsive urges go away.

5. Avoid situations where you would normally smoke: If you normally associate drinking with smoking then avoid going out with your friends to places you would normally smoke. It may be a better idea to actually for the first few weeks not to go out at all so that you will not be tempted.

6. Don’t be afraid to ask for help: Talk to your friends and family there will also be a helpline number included in most NRT gum packages, smoking patches etc. Phone them and talk to them if you feel like you are going to give in a pick up a cigarette.

7. Keep positive: From time to time you will feel low and wonder if you are doing the right thing but you need to try and keep positive and get rid of the negative through deep breathing, meditation and exercise! Keep going your goal can be achieved!!

There are many different brands of nicotine gum on the market for you to choose from. They all do the same thing so the more expensive gums may not always be the better choice. All nicotine gums contain nicotine and are known on the market as NRT or nicotine replacement therapy. They can be used in conjunction with other NRT’s like patches or replacement plastic cigarettes but they can also be used on their own to help you quit your habit of smoking. As discussed in other articles on this site nicotine is addictive and when you are trying to quit you can experience a whole range of withdrawal symptoms which can be very upsetting for the person who is trying to quit. NRT works by giving you enough nicotine to help keep the receptors in check. This is provided by the gum when chewed. You can buy on the market some gums that are flavoured as chewing nicotine can be very unpleasant and the makers of the gum soon found out that no one wanted to buy the original flavour so they added different flavours to tempt the people who were trying to quit back to trying the gum out.

The gum is not chewed like normal gum but is chewed for a minuet until the flavour and hit of nicotine becomes strong, when this happens you have to stop chewing and place the gum between your teeth and cheek, this done over and over again until the gum looses all of the nicotine which has now entered into your blood stream. A piece of gum lasts on average about twenty minuets to half an hour. The gums comes normally in two different strengths; for people who smoke less than twenty a day the 2mg gum is advised and for people who smoke more than twenty a day there is a 4mg option which will further help reduce the cravings. The amount of gum you chew each day will depend on the amount you smoked and how often you get cravings for a cigarette. There are warning labels on the packets that will advise you the daily limit that you are allowed to chew per day without overdosing.

As you begin your program of using the gum you will find quite quickly that you will have less and les cravings. The manufacturers and the medical association all agree that the gum should be used for three months or more after you first quit smoking. Some people worry that they are going to become addicted to the gum but this very, very rarely happens and even if it did it is less dangerous to your health than being addicted to smoking as the nicotine is so minimal that it being released in to your blood stream than if you smoke a normal cigarette.

As well as using NRT replacement therapies you need to also avoid situations where you would normally have smoked to break the physiological cycle where you associate yourself with smoking.

Nicotine patches have been around on the market for people to buy when they want to try and quit smoking for over fifteen years. The first patch was marketed back in nineteen ninety three. The patches come in different strengths depending on the level that you smoke will depend on which patch you need to be using first the highest milligram patch is the 21mg and is normally used by people who smoke twenty or more cigarettes a day. This is used for several weeks before the next step down the 14mg patch is then used as a replacement, this the leads to the 7mg patch and then nothing. This way the smoker is slowly weaned off the nicotine addiction enabling them to completely quit. The regime from start to finish usually takes around approximately ten weeks but for heavy smokers it can take longer and likewise for lighter smokers it can be as little as a couple of weeks to beat the nicotine receptors at their own game!

The patches cost anything from $20 to $30 a week which works out a lot cheaper than buying cigarettes in the first place. Not all patches now are branded names, many chemists are now using their own brands which are making them even cheaper still.

There are side effects to the use of nicotine patches that can be quite frightening though. Some people have reported having nightmares whilst sleeping as some of the patches are designed to be worn for twenty four hours and then replaced. Because the nicotine is slowly released into your blood stream it is like smoking in your sleep in effect which you would not normally do. This can cause bad dreams, vivid and unusual dreams and in some extreme cases all and out nightmares. Because of this some brands have introduced patches that can be worn all day and removed at night before bed. But because of this some people have reported that they suffer from morning cravings as the patches do not work instantly as soon as they are applied they take a few hours to kick in fully leaving the wearer to use nothing but their will power alone to see them through. Other people have claimed that they get rashes from wearing the patches and very bad itching. It is advised that the patch is worn in a different place everyday to avoid further irritation problems. Some people find the burning sensation does go slightly after an hour but others find a very sore red and enraged patch shaped burn mark that doesn’t go and it is then best to stop using the patches as this is often an indication of an allergic reaction.

Stopping smoking using patches works for some as long as they use will power as well, for others they need to combine it with other methods such as nicotine gum and other products on the market.

Hypnotherapy is performed by a licensed practitioner who has had to learn the art of putting someone into a deep trance and then implanting suggestions into that person’s mind for or against a certain thing. For some people this works wonder for others it doesn’t but for the most part people will tell you it is the best money they have ever spent on stopping smoking compared to more traditional methods. Now a trace is something most of us do without even realising it in or everyday lives. We can get lost in a good book, a game you are playing on your video console or even watching a film. We become so engrossed in what we are doing that all time and other things just slip from out minds and after we “come to” we realise that we have “lost” a certain amount of time without realising it. This is very similar to hypnotherapy, this is because we are fully aware of other things around us, you are totally conscious and able to leave or stop what you are doing at anytime or point if you really needed to and you have been able to engross your mind in a form of “role play” as such. When reading a book we can often use our imaginations to create a film of sorts to entertain us from the words written and the descriptive language used. When we watch the film made from the book we find that the film will either marry up to the image we created in our own minds or that it differs slightly but the outcome is the same. This is called by scientists as the willing suspension of disbelief – it is when the brain is able to by pass the conscious and enter the sub conscious. This is also true when it comes to hypnotherapy.

A hypnotherapist will if you allow it to be able to by pass your conscious and ration thought patterns of what you can see, touch, smell and feel and get into your sub conscious the part of you that truly rules who you are, why you act in certain ways and manors and to the true centre of your mind. Once in a trance the hypnotherapist can implant suggestions, make changes, in effect change the way you act without you truly realising what you are doing consciously because it has been implanted into the subconscious. A hypnotherapist can help you loose weight, stop smoking, forget harmful and traumatic experiences and also some say can regress you to former lives if they dig deep enough. They implant positive not negative thoughts and ideas that can truly change your life for the better.

Some people require just one session and can never pick up a cigarette again others need more than one session, but either way hypnotherapy should not be ruled out as a way of stopping smoking and is known to be exceptionally effective.
